You can fill the Kong with cheese and milk bones, baby food or any other dog-safe treats that she can smell the food and utilize her tongue, mouth and paws to work it out.Start with treats that drop out easily and work up to more challenging tasks. At some point, she’ll be ready to take on the tougher things that is frozen Kongs with a coating with a gooey substance (like peanut butter) and thrown into freezing for few hours.
- Treat treasure hunts. Before you leave, “hide” a few of your dog’s favourite treats all over the house for her to discover when you’re gone. This works especially well in the event that your dog has learned how to “find it,” which you can call out as you’re heading out the door.
- New toys. Always keep a collection of fun and interesting items around, changing different ones from time the time. Like humans, dogs become bored with the same thing every day. These toys don’t need to be brand new or have to be traded with a neighbor or friend. It’s important that they’re interesting to her.
- Learning. Take time to teach your dog new techniques. If you’re not sure how to go about it to begin, you could enroll in courses together. Even after she’s mastered the basics, such as ” sit” and ” come,” regular lessons will keep her mentally sharp. Added benefit: positively-reinforced training builds her confidence and strengthens the bond between the two of you.
